J-SERIES / NEW COLOURS AND SURFACES
Designed to recreate the classic FDB furniture collection, the J-Series offers a functional design born out of industrial development. In line with HAY's core values of creating functional, affordable furniture for the masses, HAY continues to produce the iconic series in solid, long-lasting wood, now updated in contemporary colours and finishes that add versatility to the chairs' timeless aesthetics.
FDB created a strong furniture concept in 1933, and under Børge Mogensen’s leadership as design director from 1942, the FDB furniture linked industrial production closely with architectural furniture design.
The primary focus was not on detailing, but on making well-designed furniture accessible to the general population.
FDB revolutionised the industry as a precursor of many of the design icons that Denmark is acknowledged for today around the world.
J41 and J42 were designed by Børge Mogensen

about the designers
Børge Mogensen, Poul M. Volther, Folke Pålsson, and Joergen Baekmark all stand out in history as some of the greatest Danish designers of the twentieth century. Although each designer had their own distinctive style, they were linked by the desire to create simple, elegant, and practical design intended for mass consumption. They were all involved with FDB furniture design studio (Fællesforeningen for Danmarks Brugsforeninger/ Danish Consumers Cooperative Society), which played a pivotal role in revolutionising the furniture industry in Denmark.
